Waking from Limbo

It has taken me some time to extract myself from the dark wood because creating art is not just about what emerges in the studio. Art happens over time and has many facets involving a whole lot of ideas, imagination and play. Finishing an artwork is not the end , its just the beginning, so how good is it to be at a beginning again. I write about this effect in my book Harnessing the Power of the Creative Spiral

During this year, which is fast coming to an end, I had been working towards an exhibition, now scheduled for the end of January, for Feather and Lawry Gallery in Russell Street, Toowoomba, Queensland. I am pretty much ready for this event so in late November I choose to have an operation on my left hand. Rather than be stressed about staying out of the studio for a month or two I have chosen to catch up on many things including updating my websites. However research remains my core goal.

This current experience is so different from previously feeling a dark night of the soul when lacking a studio space while moving from my home of 33 years. I landed in a very different environment and went from extreme dry to extreme wet. Throw in significant damage from a hail storm and renovating while building a dedicated gallery, and it makes sense. These were major life changes I experienced.

For 2023 my ongoing goals are to play, explore, find new ways off working and above all TRUST myself to stay true to who I am. I think about reaching out to more galleries, entering art awards, doing more marketing, but in the end I really want to just fold into myself and explore who I really am. We are all on an organic road, one that will take twists and turns, has rises and falls and goes through dark forests. When we emerge into the light everything looks brighter, more beautiful and full of hope.

My wish for us all is too bring light and love fully into our lives and for art to shine by filling those lonely spaces that exist in dark worlds.

Ningi Studio and Art Gallery

After a two year journey in which I moved with husband Peter from our beloved rural home and studio at Tallegalla I have finally established a wonderful alternative on a garden acre at Ningi in the Bribie Pines Estate. The new gallery will be open to the public by appointment only so I can enjoy the tranquility of working in my studio without interruption. This is a much needed situation to create artwork which can only arise from working in a fully immersed state of creativity however tools can be downed to accommodate visitors.

The connection to my previous life at Tallegalla is serendipitous. I often wander of a morning through a grove of trees and paths in the garden which is so private. This space will lend itself beautifully to workshops when the opportunity arises. My separate studio is a short walk from the dedicated art gallery and both have been a while in the making. Good things do come to those that wait.

On display in the gallery are a selection of artworks I mostly carried with me from Tallegalla however the aim is to create new bodies of work inspired by my new surroundings and some inspiring trips into the Australian wilderness.

On the far wall above is my latest painting 122 x 60 cm. I hope to continue this theme as a series of colour works.

RE:Location- an interactive art exhibition

Lyne Marshall’s RE:Location exhibition at Manning Art Gallery 2nd March – 2nd April 2017

Standing among the results of two years of my creative time, presented now by gallery staff and volunteers with so much love and attention, is an affirming moment. What an adventure it has been delivering the art to Manning Gallery in Taree NSW for the RE:Location exhibition. I have been introduced to a new group of arts workers, who not only love the arts, but do what they do with great enthusiasm. See the VIDEO of setting up here and links to workshops are below.

Lyne Marshall’s RE:Location exhibition at Manning Regional Art Gallery

This exhibition of 14 paintings, 6 digital artworks, 16 sculptures [and 6 Log Lights by my partner Peter Marshall ] started with an overseas venture to visit the homelands of my ancestors who came to Australia in the 18oo’s. It has now culminated with this exhibition, a video and a new book, RE:Location as Inspiration: Creating from Diverse Landscapes

Back in 2015 I wanted to return something of myself to those ancestral lands so I secreted 10 little art-pods, which contained signed images of my artworks for the taking. For this exhibition I have placed 8 new art-pods in the Taree area, and invite the viewers of my exhibition to find them with GPS co-ordinates. The POD LOCATIONS are listed here with the co-ordinates, tips, and approximate distance from the gallery. Enter the numbers into the SEARCH on Google Maps. The art-pods are all on public land and require no digging so if you find one please take an image and return the Pod without bringing attention to its placement.

RE:Location is showing at Manning Gallery from the 2^nd March to the 2^nd April 2017 with an opening the 4^th, and an artist talk at 2pm on the 5^th. Professional Development workshops on Wednesday 28^th and Finding Creative Direction two day workshop on the 1^st and 2^nd of April can be booked with the gallery.

Feeding the Eternal Soul

It’s getting darker now. The sun, casting a chartreuse green hue over the water, illuminates the partly submerged logs that offer a haven for assorted wildlife. As night falls the black cockatoos with their noisy chatter, add to the mood that has grown in dimensions over the few days we camped beside Tooloom Creek.

It has been a hectic three months getting my new book to press. With no Internet or phone, this time has been an opportunity for deep reflection, as deep and wide as the water stretched before us. Many have related that watching water, be it the sea, a river or a creek, cleans out the mind and enriches the soul.

Beside walking down to the falls, and exploring the causeway I spent most of my time reading and contemplating new artworks, while my partner went on numerous excursions down the creek in the inflatable boat. I don’t come easy to relaxing during the day. At home I usually fill my time with many active pursuits.

However nature has many lessons to teach us; the first being that we have an eternal self, a part of us that needs to be regularly replenished. The practical side, of many of us, wants to live a full life and fill every moment with ‘doing ‘.

I learnt over those few days beside the water that there are some things we can’t change, and moments of solitude allow us to reflect and transform. Unfortunately there is a dark side to life, and when sad things happen, as well as inspiring creativity, a venture into nature can heal the heart.

Studies from the Australian outback

My inspiration comes from engaging with the natural beauty of the wilderness places I visit, and also the distillation of these experiences in the studio. I attempt to capture the emotions I experience through sketches and photographs initially, and recreate these feelings in my home work-space.

The history of the people who chose to live in the isolated areas I visit is evident through there sense of dedication to the land. Expressing this experience through finished artworks gives me a sense of completion.

The next journey in 2016 will be to the Kimberleys in Western Australia, travelling via Lake Eyre and The Painted Desert and also visiting the Pilbra. Many accomplished artists have undertaken this journey long before me and I am excited to be walking in their footsteps and look forward to new artworks in the future.
